DeSantis added Palm Beach County to Florida's flooding state of emergency

The flood emergency now covers 14 Florida counties

Over 22 inches
of rain in parts of West Palm Beach, Commissioner Gregg Weiss said

If you live in Palm Beach County, your county is now covered. Gov. Ron DeSantis expanded Florida's flooding declaration Wednesday to add Glades, Hendry, Lake, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Seminole, and Volusia counties. The original order, , covered Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, and Highlands.

The declaration gives state and local officials more authority and resources. It lets the state activate the Florida National Guard, close roads, and waive tolls if needed. Meanwhile, 1290 WJNO reports that six Palm Beach County schools stayed closed Thursday.

  • Closed Thursday: six schools, including Jeaga Middle and West Boca High
  • St. Lucie County schools: closed Thursday, expected to reopen Friday
  • County Emergency Operations Center: Level 2, a partial activation

County commissioners say the rain was extreme. Weiss said it's the kind of event some call a "one-in-1,000-type" storm, and Commissioner Maria Sachs said new homes and businesses need drainage planning.

“This rain, my gosh, it never ends.”

Rescues

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue pulled people from floodwater for three straight days

Sunday evening, starting around 5 p.m., Palm Beach County Fire Rescue took more than seventy 911 calls from the area. Nearly 100 residents were trapped in vehicles. Crews found floating cars with people inside and water 3 to 4 feet deep in places. Drones with thermal cameras helped find them, and no injuries were reported.

On Monday night, the swiftwater team headed to Riviera Beach for nearly 24 hours, using rafts and boats to check homes door to door. It evacuated 71 people and nine pets and made two medical rescues. City Manager Williams Wilkins said more than 19 inches of rain fell in 12 hours.

Lost and found

This sweet baby followed me onto my porch during the storm and flooding, frightened and looking for shelter and food.

“💔🐾 I'm not sure if he belongs to someone, but It breaks my heart seeing him so scared and helpless. If he's yours, please come get your baby! And if he doesn't have a home, I'm really hoping someone with a kind heart can give him a safe, loving one. ❤️ P.S. Let me clarify a few things: YES, he's already been taken…”
